Student organizations at SMU may seek recognition from Student Senate by applying for a charter. Organizations approved for a temporary charter complete a probationary period before applying for a charter. In both stages, student organizations have rights and responsibilities.

The process is managed by the Senate Organizations Committee led by Chair Joey Grey.
